WAYS TO DEAL WITH REGRET AS STOIC.
  • Regret is the feeling of dissatisfaction or disappointment with past actions or decisions.
  • It occurs when we dwell on things we can not control and resist our fate. Regret is often fueled by the belief that if we had acted differently, the outcome would have been better.
  • However, the Stoics argue that we should be satisfied with what we have and accept the present moment. They believe that regret is an emotion of our imagination and that we often suffer more in imagination than in reality.
  • It is our assessment of external things that causes the problem, and we have the power to change that assessment. Despite the cultural emphasis on living without regrets, it is important to acknowledge and address these negative feelings rather than hide from them.
  • We should strive for improvement and reformation rather than succumbing to despair.
  • To deal with regret, there are three key steps:
  1. Focus on what you control: Recognize that the past and future have no power over you. Instead, focus on the present moment and identify what you can control. Minimize the influence of external factors and take responsibility for your actions and choices.
  2. Love your fate: Accept that there are things beyond your control and embrace your circumstances. Instead of resisting or resenting them, learn to respond positively and constructively. Take ownership of how you handle yourself and overcome obstacles.
  3. Look ahead: Practice premeditatio malorum, which involves projecting your thoughts into the future and considering all possible outcomes and setbacks. By being prepared for life’s challenges, you can approach them with resilience and adaptability.
  • By following these steps, you can develop a mindset that allows you to navigate regret and move forward with a sense of control and preparedness.
